There are currently three main mating methods used for mutton sheep: natural mating, artificial breeding assistance, and artificial insemination. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on the scale of the operation, resource availability, and breeding goals.
1. Natural Mating: This is the most traditional method, where rams are allowed to mate with ewes freely during the breeding season. Typically, a ratio of 1 ram to 20 ewes is maintained. The process involves mixing the animals in pastures or pens, allowing them to breed naturally. This method is simple, cost-effective, and often results in a high conception rate. It is suitable for small-scale or scattered flocks. However, it has several drawbacks. The rams may become overworked, and the genetic background of the offspring is unclear, increasing the risk of inbreeding. Additionally, it is difficult to predict the lambing date. To mitigate these issues, rams can be rotated between different groups each breeding season, and male and female sheep can be kept separate when not breeding.
2. Artificial Breeding Assistance: In this method, the estrus cycle of ewes is monitored, and mating is done under controlled conditions. This allows for better management of ram usage, more precise selection of breeding stock, and better control over the timing of pregnancy. It also enables multiple breedings, such as double mating, where two rams or two breedings occur within a short period. This helps increase the chances of successful fertilization and ensures that the expected lambing date is more predictable.
3. Artificial Insemination (AI): This is a more advanced technique where semen is collected from rams, processed, and then manually introduced into the ewe’s reproductive tract. AI offers greater control over genetics, reduces the risk of disease transmission, and allows for the use of high-quality rams across large areas. The process involves several key steps: collection, dilution, preservation, and insemination.
The artificial insemination process includes the following stages: First, sperm collection. Before collecting, the ram must be trained, and all equipment should be sterilized. A dummy vagina is checked for temperature, pressure, and lubrication before use. When the ram mounts the ewe, the collector quickly places the penis into the dummy vagina. After ejaculation, the collected semen is tested for quality and viability. Next, the semen is diluted using solutions like goat milk, glucose, or saline. Dilution increases the volume, extends the lifespan of the sperm, and makes it easier to transport. The diluted semen can be stored at normal temperatures (15°C–20°C) for up to 1–2 days or preserved in liquid nitrogen for long-term storage. During transportation, care must be taken to avoid shaking or extreme temperature changes.
Insemination itself requires careful timing. Ewes typically show estrus for 24–48 hours, and ovulation occurs 12–40 hours after the start of estrus. For optimal results, insemination should be performed around 8–20 hours after the onset of estrus in sheep and 12–24 hours in goats. To improve conception rates, repeated breeding is often used. For example, if a ewe is detected in the morning, she can be bred once in the morning and again in the evening. If detected in the afternoon, she can be bred once in the evening and again the next morning. The interval between breedings should be between 10 and 18 hours. Different rams can be used, or the same ram can be used for multiple breedings.
