World Health Organization establishes clinical trial search portal

On May 10, 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially launched a new clinical trial search portal aimed at improving global access to medical research. This platform allows researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, journalists, and the general public to search for ongoing or completed clinical trials worldwide. Before the introduction of this portal, it was often challenging for doctors and patients to find detailed and complete information about clinical studies. Many trials went unpublished, and even those that were published sometimes lacked essential details. The WHO emphasized that registering clinical trials is the best way to ensure transparency and accessibility of medical research data. With thousands of clinical trials being conducted globally, users often struggled to find reliable and accurate information. In response, the WHO developed this centralized search portal to streamline the process. All information provided through the portal comes from registries that are part of the WHO Global Clinical Trial Registry Partnership Network. These registries collaborate internationally to share and verify clinical trial data. Each registry must meet strict criteria, including ensuring that trials are registered before they begin and providing 20 key details as required by the WHO. This helps maintain the quality and reliability of the data available. Users can now easily search for clinical trials in specific areas and access verified information from registries around the world. For more detailed data, they can click on links to view full registration records. The WHO encourages researchers to register their studies through the organization’s network of clinical trial registries. This initiative marks a significant step forward in promoting transparency and accountability in medical research. It empowers patients and healthcare providers with better access to critical clinical trial data, ultimately supporting more informed decision-making in healthcare.
