Biogas fertilizer is rich in essential nutrients such as organic matter, amino acids, humus, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, along with beneficial substances like auxins and antibiotics. Most harmful bacteria and eggs are eliminated during the anaerobic digestion process, making it a non-polluting and environmentally friendly fertilizer. It offers high efficiency, improved fertility, and long-term soil enhancement. When applied to fruit trees, biogas fertilizer not only improves soil structure and enhances water retention and drought resistance but also boosts photosynthesis, promotes flower bud formation, and supports even fruit ripening. It strengthens tree vitality, increases cold resistance, and ultimately helps achieve better yields and higher quality fruits.
Biogas fertilizer comes in two main forms: biogas slurry and biogas residue. Here are the key application techniques:
I. Application of Biogas Residue
Biogas residue is the solid sediment left after the anaerobic fermentation of organic materials like animal manure. It is typically used as a base fertilizer. The best time to apply it is after the harvest in autumn. For mature trees, the radial trenching method is recommended—digging ditches around the canopy, 0.2–0.4 meters deep and 0.3–0.4 meters wide. Apply approximately 50 kg of residue per tree, mixed with straw and soil. Adding 1.5 kg of calcium phosphate can enhance its effectiveness. For young saplings, use a circular furrow method, keeping the depth shallow—about 0.15–0.35 meters and 0.2–0.3 meters wide. Be careful not to damage the roots, and rotate the fertilization area each year to ensure even nutrient distribution.
II. Application of Biogas Slurry
Biogas slurry is the liquid byproduct from the fermentation process, appearing bright brown in color. It is commonly used as a top-dressing or foliar fertilizer.
(1) Top-dressing: Use the ring-shaped groove method by digging a shallow ditch (10–15 cm deep) outside the tree’s drip line. Before applying, dilute the slurry with clear water at a ratio of 2:1 to avoid root burn. Apply about 2 kg of diluted slurry per plant 10 days before the trees start sprouting. After new shoots appear, increase the amount to 3 kg per plant. For young trees, apply every 15–30 days depending on growth conditions.
(2) Foliar application: Extract the slurry from a well-maintained digester that has been producing gas for over a month. Make sure to filter it to prevent clogging of sprayers. Spray in the early morning after dew has dried (around 10:00 am), or in the late afternoon during summer. Avoid spraying during midday heat or before heavy rain. Spray the underside of leaves for better absorption. Adjust the concentration based on the season and tree stage: mix 1 part slurry with 1–2 parts water for seedlings or young leaves, 1:1 for hot summer months, and no water for older, healthy leaves.
