World Health Organization establishes clinical trial search portal

On May 10, 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a new clinical trial search portal aimed at improving access to global research data. This platform allows researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, journalists, and the general public to explore ongoing and completed clinical trials worldwide. Before this initiative, it was often challenging for doctors and patients to find comprehensive and accurate information about medical treatments. Many studies remained unpublished, and even those that were published sometimes lacked full details. The WHO emphasized that registering clinical trials is essential to ensure transparency and accessibility of research findings. This practice has gained increasing support across the global healthcare sector. However, with thousands of clinical trials conducted globally, users often struggled to find reliable information. To address this issue, the WHO developed the search portal as a centralized resource. All registries contributing to the portal are part of the WHO Global Clinical Trial Registry Partnership Network, ensuring high-quality and standardized data. Each registry must meet strict criteria, including not registering trials before they begin and providing 20 key details per study. This ensures that the information available is both accurate and useful. Through the portal, users can easily search for trials in specific areas and access detailed data from registries around the world. The WHO encourages researchers to register their studies through the network's participating registries. This initiative marks a significant step toward greater openness and accountability in medical research. Source: China National Times
