More than 26 million people in China suffer from depression

Release date: 2007-05-16

Depression is a growing public health concern in China, affecting over 26 million individuals. According to Professor Zhao Jingping, deputy director of the Chinese Medical Association's Psychiatric Branch, only 40% of those suffering from depression report satisfactory results from antidepressant treatment. Shockingly, 90% of patients with depression have never received regular medical care, highlighting a significant gap in mental health support.

Reports indicate that nearly 43% of people with depression also experience chronic pain. What’s alarming is that many wait an average of 11 months before seeking medical help, and it often takes up to five visits for them to be correctly diagnosed with depression. As a result, approximately 30% of patients endure chronic pain for as long as five years before receiving the right diagnosis and treatment.

Depression is a serious mental and physical illness, yet its recognition rate in hospitals above the city level remains below 20%. Nearly one-third of those affected have never received any form of treatment, and 10% still do not get proper medical care. In terms of disease burden, by 2020, depression was projected to become the second most burdensome illness in China, according to the Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association. These figures underscore the urgent need for better awareness, early diagnosis, and improved access to mental health services across the country.
