Cygnus is a benthic fish commonly found in freshwater environments with dense aquatic vegetation. It has a dark coloration and is primarily carnivorous, feeding on small animals and live prey. When raised in captivity, it can also consume animal carcasses or commercially prepared feeds.
1. **Fishpond Construction**
A suitable fishpond can be built in an unused area behind the house. The pond can be made of earth or concrete, with an area ranging from several square meters to as large as 100 square meters. The water depth should be between 0.6 and 1.2 meters. To prevent escape, the pond's edges should be raised by 50-60 cm using bamboo fences or plastic nets. Planting water hyacinth or similar plants in the pond can cover about half the surface area, providing shelter and improving water quality. Before stocking, the pond must be disinfected with quicklime. If it's a new cement pond, it should be rinsed with clean water for 10-15 days to remove any residual chemicals.
2. **Stocking Fish**
It is recommended to stock 30-50 fish per square meter, with each fish measuring 3-5 cm in length. All fish should be of similar size and quality to ensure even growth. Stocking density depends on factors such as water source, water quality, farming techniques, and feed availability.
3. **Feeding and Management**
(1) Feeding starts when the fish reach 6 cm in length. Initially, they are fed live leeches or other small live baits. Once they grow beyond 6 cm, they can be fed fresh fish, worms, or other live bait. A high-protein compound feed (with more than 40% protein) can also be used, but after a certain stage, live food should be reintroduced. The recommended feed is Fuxing brand floating fish feed. Feed twice daily—once in the morning and once in the afternoon—and provide enough food that the fish can consume within one hour. The daily feeding amount should be around 5% of their body weight.
(2) Water quality management is essential. New water should be added every 10-20 days, with 20-30 cm added each time. Keep the water clean and clear by planting water lilies or other aquatic plants to naturally filter the water. Regularly disinfect the water using chlorine or other approved disinfectants. Placing bricks at the bottom of the pond can create hiding spots and improve the habitat.
(3) Daily management involves regularly checking the pond and observing the fish’s behavior. Look out for signs of stress or abnormal activity. Prevent escapes and protect against birds and rats. As the fish grow, monitor their sizes and separate them if needed to avoid competition and overeating.
4. **Disease Prevention**
To prevent diseases, use bactericidal drugs or insecticides alternately every 7-10 days. Soaking leaves of hard training or Houttuynia in the water can also help maintain hygiene. Additionally, medicated feed can be used, mixing medicines like Diarrhea Spirit or Strong Grams 99 with floating pellets. Feed this mixture for 3-5 days, allowing the fish to consume it after soaking for 10-20 minutes. This helps boost their immunity and reduce the risk of infections.
