Cygnus is a bottom-dwelling fish commonly found in dense aquatic vegetation and freshwater environments. It has a dark coloration and is primarily carnivorous, feeding on small animals and live prey. In captivity, it can adapt to eating animal carcasses or commercial fish feed.
1. **Fishpond Construction**
A fishpond can be built in an unused area behind a house. The pond can be made of earthen material or concrete, with an area ranging from several square meters up to 100 square meters. The water depth should be between 0.6 to 1.2 meters. To prevent the fish from escaping, the pond's edge should be raised by 50-60 cm using bamboo fences or plastic nets. Planting water hyacinth or other floating plants can cover about half the water surface, providing shade and natural filtration. Before stocking, the pond should be disinfected with quicklime. If using a new cement pond, it must be rinsed with clean water for 10-15 days to remove any harmful residues.
2. **Stocking Fish**
For stocking, you can introduce 30-50 fingerlings (3-5 cm in length) of the seven-star species per square meter of water. The fish should be uniform in size and quality. The stocking density depends on factors such as water source, water quality, farming techniques, and availability of feed.
3. **Feeding and Management**
(1) **Feeding**: Once the fish reach 6 cm in length, they can be fed live leeches, worms, or other small aquatic organisms. After that, you can switch to fresh fish, live bait like daphnia or fly larvae, or high-protein compound feed (with more than 40% protein). A recommended brand is Fuxing floating fish feed. Feed twice daily—once in the morning and once in the afternoon—and provide enough food so that all fish consume it within one hour. The daily feeding amount should be around 5% of the total fish weight.
(2) **Water Quality Management**: Change 20-30 cm of water every 10-20 days to maintain clarity and cleanliness. Planting water lilies helps purify the water naturally. Regularly disinfect the pond using chlorine-based products. Place some bricks at the bottom to create hiding spots and improve water circulation.
(3) **Daily Monitoring**: Regularly inspect the pond and observe the behavior of the fish. Watch for signs of illness or abnormal activity. Prevent escape by ensuring the fence is intact and protect against predators like birds and rats. As the fish grow, separate them into different groups to avoid overfeeding and cannibalism.
4. **Disease Prevention**
To prevent disease, disinfect the water every 7-10 days using alternating bactericidal drugs and insecticides. Soak herbs like houttuynia and hard training leaves in the water for natural disinfection. Additionally, feed medicated bait mixed with herbal remedies such as Diarrhea Spirit or Strong Grams 99. Mix these with floating pellets and let them sit for 10-20 minutes before feeding. Administer this treatment for 3-5 consecutive days to ensure effectiveness.
