Origin:
Loquat leaves are native to northern and eastern China and are now widely cultivated in these regions. They thrive in temperate climates and are commonly found in gardens and landscapes.
Morphological Features:
Prunus triloba is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 3–5 meters tall. It has purple-brown branches with rough bark, while young shoots are smooth or slightly hairy. The leaves are alternate, broadly elliptical or obovate, with an acuminate or three-lobed tip. The base is broadly cuneate, and the margins are coarsely serrated. The leaves are dark green on the surface.
Flowers appear singly or in small clusters in the leaf axils, with short stems close to the branches. The flowers are red or white, and can be single, semi-double, or double. They bloom in April, usually before or alongside the leaves, with a diameter of 2–3 cm.
The fruit is a drupe, which turns red when ripe in July.
Growing Conditions:
This plant prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It is cold-hardy and can survive winter temperatures as low as -35°C. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline. It is drought-tolerant but not waterlogged. It is also resistant to many diseases.
Best growth occurs in sunny locations with loose, well-draining soil.

Prunus triloba is commonly propagated through seeds, cuttings, and grafting. All methods have high survival rates, making it easy to cultivate.
Cultivation and Care:
When planting, choose a site with well-drained, fertile soil and plenty of sunlight. Planting is typically done after the leaves fall in autumn. During rainy seasons, ensure good drainage. Apply antifreeze water before frost, and fertilize after flowering. Due to its vigorous growth, pruning should be done after flowering. Prune to remove dense, weak, or diseased branches, and use both shearing and short cutting to maintain shape. Proper pruning will promote abundant blooms the following year.
