Perfume Grass Heliotrope

Alias: Heliotrope

Genus: Comfrey, Heliopsis, Subshrubs

Morphological Characteristics:

The plant is completely covered in soft white hairs. It typically grows to a height of 50-70 cm, with upright branches and a lignified base. The leaves are alternate, ovate to ovate-elliptic in shape, with sunken veins. The leaf surface is wrinkled and dark green. The inflorescence is terminal, with flowers that are either purple or white. The plant emits a pleasant fragrance. The flowers are short funnel-shaped, with five lobes, and they open gradually. There are various color varieties, including light blue, blue, indigo, dark blue, and deep blue, as well as large-flowered types.

The leaves of the perfume grass are rich green, thick, and wrinkled. The small flowers are grouped into fluffy balls, appearing in ochre or purple tones. They have a unique, tempting aroma that brings a sense of relaxation and happiness.

Origin:

Native to Peru and Ecuador, this plant is widely cultivated throughout China.

Growth Habits:

It thrives in warm conditions with plenty of sunlight but avoids extreme summer heat. The ideal growth temperature ranges from 10-15°C, and it can survive winter at 5-7°C. In greenhouses, it can bloom all year round, with the main flowering season occurring in spring.

It prefers loose, fertile, and well-drained soil. Seeds remain viable for one year.

Breeding:

Propagation is mainly done through cuttings, typically carried out in spring and autumn. Young shoots, about 6-8 cm long, are used as cuttings and usually root within 10 days. Alternatively, seeds can be sown at a temperature of 22°C, with germination taking around 20-30 days.

Perfume grass is a sub-shrub, but due to its soft branches, older plants tend to become leggy and lose their attractive shape. Therefore, it is often grown for short-term use. Cuttings can flower within 2-3 months. When seedlings reach 7-8 cm in height, pinching the growing tip encourages branching. Repeating this process helps form a compact, beautiful shape.

In summer, it should be grown under shade to prevent leaf scorching from direct sunlight.

Uses:

The inflorescence of the perfume grass is fragrant, with elegant blue and purple hues, making it ideal for indoor floral arrangements during the summer. It is suitable for potted plants and as cut flowers.

It can flower throughout the year when temperatures are favorable, but the best blooming period is between April and June. Flowers containing aromatic oils can be extracted for use in perfumes and cosmetic products.

The genus includes over 250 species, found in tropical and temperate regions worldwide.

The most commonly ornamental species include the Large-flowered Perfume Grass and the European Perfume Grass.
