Golden Flower, Golden Flower, Winter Leaf

Alias: Jinhua Dongye, Huang Xiao Xiao Zhu Xi, Huang Xi Zhu Xi

Family Genus: Xiao Zhu Xi is a genus of plants belonging to the bamboo cricket family. It stands out among its relatives for its ability to both bloom beautiful flowers and offer attractive foliage.

Origin: Native to South America, particularly Brazil.

Morphological Characteristics: These plants grow in dense clusters, typically reaching heights between 15 cm and 30 cm. The leaves are long and elliptical, measuring approximately 14 to 16 cm in length and 7 cm in width. They feature wavy edges and come in shades of olive green or dark green, with some varieties displaying pale pink or reddish-brown hues. The inflorescence emerges from the foliage, often standing taller than the leaves. The sepals are yellow, and the flowers open in a vibrant yellow color.

Flowering Season: Winter and spring are the peak times for blooming.

Growth Habits: Xiao Zhu Xi thrives in warm, humid, semi-shaded environments. It does not tolerate cold temperatures and should be protected from direct sunlight, as excessive light can cause leaf curling, yellowing, and the development of leaf spots that may hinder growth and visual appeal. However, it still requires bright, indirect light to maintain healthy growth.

During the growing season, which runs from May to September, the soil should remain consistently moist but not waterlogged. Both drought and overwatering can negatively affect the plant’s health. This species has a high requirement for humidity, so regular misting of the leaves and surrounding area is recommended, especially during hot and dry summer months, to keep the foliage fresh and hydrated.

To maintain its aesthetic beauty, it's advisable to gently wipe the leaves with a soft, clean cloth. Using cold water mixed with a few drops of vinegar can help keep the leaves shiny and clean. During the growing season, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once a month, increasing the phosphorus and potassium content slightly to encourage more flower buds. In winter, reduce watering and allow the soil to dry slightly, while keeping the temperature above 15°C. If the temperature drops below 13°C, the plant may suffer from frost damage.

Repotting should be done every one to two years, using a slightly acidic, humus-rich soil mix that is loose and well-draining. A good combination includes peat soil or decomposed leaf soil mixed with a small amount of coarse sand. Avoid using heavy or alkaline soils, as they can impede root development.

Propagation of Xiao Zhu Xi is best done through division, ideally after the weather warms up in May. If the temperature is too low, the root system may become damaged and struggle to recover, leading to rot. When dividing, ensure each new plant has enough leaves and strong roots. Plant the divisions at a shallow depth to avoid hindering the growth of new shoots.
