Alias: Pearl Orchid
Family and Genus: Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum
Morphological Characteristics:
Zhulan is an evergreen shrub with thick, sturdy stems that grow between 30 to 70 cm in height. The plant has a soft and invigorating texture. Its leaves are stalked, elliptical in shape, measuring 7–8 cm long, with a blunt tip and a wedge-shaped base. The leaves are thick, soft, and smooth to the touch. From May to June, the plant produces dense spikes of flowers. The blossoms are yellow-green in color, resembling fish roe, and emit a pleasant blue fragrance. The fruit is oval-shaped and contains a single seed.
Distribution Area:
Zhulan is native to China, Japan, and North Korea, and it primarily grows in low mountainous regions of the subtropical zone. It is commonly found in the wild across southern provinces in China.
Habitat and Growing Conditions:
(1) Zhulan prefers warm climates but is sensitive to high temperatures. It is cold-tolerant, thriving in cool summers and mild winters. It requires a stable temperature with minimal seasonal variation. For winter survival, it should be kept above 5°C to avoid damage.
(2) This plant is a shade-loving species, preferring indirect light. It thrives best under 30% light transmittance, which promotes strong growth, well-developed roots, and abundant flowering. Excessive direct sunlight can cause stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and even severe sunburn. Therefore, it is essential to provide shade from summer through early autumn. However, too little light can also hinder its development.
(3) Zhulan thrives in a moist environment, requiring an air humidity of around 80% and soil moisture content between 25% and 30%. If the soil becomes too dry (below 20%), the plant may wilt, and leaves may fall off or the plant could die if not watered promptly. On the other hand, overly wet soil (above 40%) can weaken the plant, making it more prone to disease, causing drooping leaves, slow growth, and poor flowering.
(4) Zhulan has fleshy roots that store a lot of water. It needs good air circulation and well-drained soil. A loose, fertile sandy loam rich in humus is ideal for its growth. During rainy seasons, the soil must drain quickly, while during droughts, it should retain enough moisture. If the soil is too heavy and poorly drained, the root system will not develop properly, leading to weak growth and fewer flowers. Waterlogging during the rainy season can result in root rot, leaf loss, and even plant death. When growing Zhulan in pots, a drainage layer of coarse sand, gravel, or cinder should be placed at the bottom of the pot to ensure proper drainage and aeration.
Application and Use:
Zhulan features soft, green branches and an elegant posture. It is ideal for indoor cultivation during the summer, with beautiful blooms that make it perfect for windowsills, balconies, flower racks, and living rooms, offering a refreshing and calming atmosphere. Its evergreen foliage and delicate flowers make it one of the top choices for potted plants. Due to its ability to thrive in shaded conditions, it is often used for indoor decoration, frequently placed on tables or near seating areas for visual appeal.
