Origin:
Native to southern China and Southeast Asia, including provinces like Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan. It thrives in subtropical climates with high humidity and moderate temperatures.
Morphological characteristics:
A evergreen shrub or small tree, often with multiple branches. The twigs are typically covered with star-shaped rust scales. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound, alternate, with 3–5 leaflets. The upper leaflets are larger, obovate to oblong in shape, smooth or slightly wavy, glossy, and have narrow wing-like structures along the petiole.
Flowers are bisexual, arranged in panicles from the axils. They are yellow in color, highly fragrant, and resemble millet grains. The calyx has 5 lobes, petals are 5 in number, oblong, and the stamens form a tube around the ovary, which is ovate in shape.
Flowering occurs from June to July, and the berries become ripe by September.
Growing habits:
Prefers warm, humid environments with plenty of light but not direct sunlight. It requires well-drained, slightly acidic sandy soil rich in organic matter.
Propagation methods include air layering and stem cuttings.
Cultivation and care:
Use a well-draining, slightly acidic sandy loam as the growing medium. Milan plants enjoy moisture and should be placed in sunny areas. During midsummer, it's best to place them in partially shaded areas to avoid sunburn. Regular misting of the foliage helps maintain humidity and prevents dust buildup, which can cause leaf yellowing.
During the growing season, apply sufficient nitrogen fertilizer, and balance it with phosphorus and potassium to encourage bud formation and enhance the fragrance of the flowers. Before and after winter dormancy, keep the room temperature between 10–12°C (avoiding new growth to conserve energy), and ensure it doesn't drop below 5°C. Place the plant in a bright, well-ventilated area, but avoid cold drafts, as this may cause rapid leaf drop. Prune regularly before and after winter, and water according to the "see dry, see wet" principle.
Due to poor ventilation, Milan is prone to pests such as sooty mold, aphids, scale insects, and red spider mites. These can be controlled using a 40% omethoate solution diluted at 1000–1500 times.
Garden use:
Milan is commonly grown in pots for indoor decoration. Its lush green foliage and abundant blossoms add a vibrant, aromatic touch to any space. The flowers can be used as a flavoring in tea, and their essential oils are extracted for fragrance purposes. The wood is also valued for carving and craftsmanship.
