As we all know, red worms are considered the most effective natural bait for raising fry. However, these worms often carry a lot of dirt and harmful bacteria, which can lead to disease outbreaks if not properly handled. Therefore, after purchasing red worms, it is essential to thoroughly clean and disinfect them using scientific and efficient methods. Here are some detailed steps to ensure the health of your fry and prevent diseases:
First, it's recommended to purchase red worms 3–5 days in advance and place them in a dedicated red worm pond for acclimation. During this holding period, the water should be kept clean and regularly stirred. This process helps remove dead worms, dirt, and impurities, allowing the red worms to expel their waste naturally.
After 12 hours of recovery, the worms become more active. At this point, you can use a red worm box—a rectangular wooden container covered with mesh—to cover the worms. As the worms move through the mesh, they will separate from the dead ones and debris. You can then collect the live worms and transfer them to another pool for further rinsing. Repeating this process 3–4 times ensures that most of the dead worms and contaminants are removed.
Next, the disinfection process begins. One effective method is using an air compressor and air stone pump. Place the worms in a large plastic bucket (around 100 liters, filled with 170–200 kg of water) and add 40–50 kg of worms. The ratio of worms to water should be about 1:1. Continuous aeration keeps the worms active and prevents stress. To eliminate pathogens, you can use antibiotics such as oxytetracycline hydrochloride at 0.5g/kg of water or quinacridine at 0.5g/kg. Adding salt at 5‰ or using chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) or potassium permanganate can also help. These treatments should last 1–3 hours, depending on the situation.
After the treatment, rinse the worms again in the red worm pond to remove any remaining chemicals and dead worms. Before feeding, mix the worms with Baoganing 4# (2–3g/kg of worms) and Southern Pegasus (2g/kg of worms). Stir well before feeding directly to the fry.
Baoganing 4# contains various soluble high-calcium tablets, vitamins, and attractants. It helps improve the nutritional value of the worms, reduces the occurrence of three types of seedlings, enhances fish resistance to disease, and lowers stress levels. Southern Pegasus, on the other hand, is designed to prevent Edwardsiella disease and is recommended for use 2–3 times per week.
By following these steps, you can effectively manage red worms and significantly reduce the risk of disease during the white seedling stage. This careful preparation lays a solid foundation for future growth, shortens the breeding cycle, and ultimately lowers overall production costs.
