The Snapping Turtle is one of the most prominent turtle species globally, renowned for its exceptional meat yield, which can reach up to 85%–89%. The meat is tender and crisp, offering a nutritional profile that surpasses that of pork, beef, and lamb. Beyond the meat, various parts of the turtle—such as the liver, gallbladder, blood, and bones—possess significant medicinal properties. Additionally, its smooth and flexible skin is ideal for crafting high-value leather products like handbags and bags. As a result, the development of snapping turtle farming holds great potential. Currently, the market price for snapping turtles ranges from 800 to 1,000 yuan per kilogram.
When setting up a turtle pond, it's essential to choose a location with access to clean water, minimal pollution, and a quiet yet convenient environment. The pond can be a rectangular concrete structure with rounded corners facing east-west or an earthen pond of similar shape but built with anti-escape measures. Each pool should cover an area ranging from tens to hundreds of square meters, with a depth of 1.2m to 1.5m. The water depth should be between 30cm and 80cm, and the bottom should slope from north to south at a rate of 10–16 degrees, with a drain pipe equipped with a mesh cover at the lowest point. The corners of the pond should be rounded, and the walls should be 1m high, with escape-proof plates and doors on the sides. A T-shaped escape wall can also be added on top of the pool to prevent any possible escapes.
For stocking density, when starting with turtles weighing around 200g each, the initial density should be 24–27 per square meter, equivalent to about 5kg per square meter. As the turtles grow rapidly, it's crucial to adjust the density accordingly. When the average size reaches 350–400g, reduce the stocking to 20–22 per square meter. At 500g, the density should be 15–17 per square meter; at 600g, 12–14 per square meter; at 700g, 10–12 per square meter; and at 800g, 8–9 per square meter.
Feeding should consist of either commercial feed or fresh food. The recommended amount of compound feed is 1.5%–2.5% of the total weight of the turtles, while fresh feed should be given at 5%–10%. Feeding should occur three times daily—at 6:00–7:00, 12:00–13:00, and 17:00–18:00. It's important to distribute the food evenly and avoid concentrating it in one spot, which can lead to waste. The number of feeding stations should be based on the size of the pond, typically 3–4 per square meter.
Water quality management is critical due to the high-density nature of turtle farming. Turtles consume more food and produce more waste, leading to faster water pollution. Harmful substances such as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may accumulate. To address this, adding photosynthetic bacteria during water changes can help improve water quality. Every time new water is added, apply 10â»â¶ to 15â»â¶ concentration of photosynthetic bacteria. Water changes are also effective—adjusting the water level by about 20cm or changing it every two days helps maintain clarity. Avoid long periods without water changes, and ensure no foul odors develop. Applying lime (70×10â»â¶) every 7–10 days is also beneficial, but it should not be used simultaneously with photosynthetic bacteria.
Maintaining optimal water temperature is vital for growth and survival. Snapping turtles grow significantly slower in temperatures below 18°C–20°C compared to their ideal range of 30°C–31°C. Therefore, keeping the water temperature within this range is essential. During extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain or sudden temperature drops, ponds should be protected to prevent drastic temperature fluctuations exceeding 2°C.
Disease prevention is generally straightforward, as snapping turtles are relatively resistant to illness. However, under high-density conditions, they may suffer from indigestion. In such cases, feeding them bait containing multi-enzyme tablets (2 tablets per kg of turtle) can help. For traumatic injuries, disinfect the affected area with iodine-soaked cotton and apply an anti-inflammatory ointment for 2–4 days. Regular monitoring and timely intervention can ensure healthy growth and minimize losses.
