"Two-stage" Sheep-rearing New Technology

Liaoning Fengcheng is a key region for raising cashmere goats in Liaoning Province. In recent years, most local sheep farmers have shifted from traditional extensive grazing and supplementary feeding methods to the "two-stage" breeding system. This approach reduces grassland overgrazing, eases the conflict between livestock and forestry, and significantly improves economic returns. Each goat produces 50–100 grams of cashmere, increasing income by 15–30 yuan per animal. The "two-stage" system divides the year into two main periods: summer and autumn grazing (May 16 to November 15), and winter and spring feeding (November 16 to May 15). During the summer grazing period, farmers use the "starry grazing" method—early morning grazing, late afternoon return, and rest during the hottest part of the day. After returning, sheep are allowed to cool down in open or shaded areas before being housed. Grazing is avoided in low-lying areas to prevent parasitic infections. As fall progresses, grazing continues all day, and scattered grains, fallen leaves, and wild grass seeds are used to supplement feed. Lambs are weaned at 4–5 months old, and early October is used for artificial insemination or natural mating. By mid-October, deworming is carried out using "Bug-star" products, and three essential vaccines are administered: goat epidemic, sheep enterotoxemia, and foot rot. In early November, the sheep pens are cleaned, with each sheep allocated 1 square meter of space and a playground twice as large. Feeding troughs, grass troughs, and salt dispensers are set up for daily use. Flock culling is done to remove weak or sick animals, and sufficient forage such as hay, crop stalks, and silage is prepared. Each sheep needs about 200 kg of straw, 300 kg of green feed, and 20–30 kg of concentrate for the winter. Corn stalks and straw can be stored as silage or ammoniated feed. In mid-November, selenium injections are given to improve immunity. During the winter and spring feeding period, attention is given to breeding management. In late spring, rams are prepared for mating by removing their belly covers and allowing them to breed. Rams are fed high-quality hay, peanut meal, and root vegetables during non-breeding seasons, along with a balanced concentrate mix. Ewes receive short-term intensive feeding before mating, followed by carefully controlled diets during pregnancy to avoid complications. After weaning, lambs are gradually introduced to concentrates and forage. Deworming and vaccinations are carried out alongside ewes. In early April, lambing begins, and lactating ewes are provided with extra feed. Lambs start with colostrum, then transition to forage and gradually increase concentrate intake. In late March, shearing begins, and in early May, all sheep receive triple vaccinations, deworming, and selenium shots. To protect against cold weather, "Sheep Storks" are placed on wooden boards in pens during early summer. This comprehensive system ensures healthy, productive cashmere goats and sustainable farming practices in the region.

Veterinary Ultrasound Scanner

As customers have higher and higher requirements for animal reproduction and animal disease diagnosis and treatment, traditional diagnostic methods such as visual inspection, stethoscope listening, thermometer inspection, and percussion and hammering can no longer meet the needs of animal husbandry production and veterinary clinics. Today, B-ultrasound is playing a big role in human medical diagnosis, and in the future, B-ultrasound will also play a role in animal medicine. We should promote the use of veterinary ultrasound scanner step by step according to the actual situation, popularize the knowledge of the use of veterinary ultrasound scanner, take this as an opportunity, and use it as a ladder to improve the level of veterinary practice in our country.
