Tibetan Mastiff Breeding and Management Practices
To ensure the healthy development of Tibetan Mastiffs, proper feeding and care must be provided at each stage of their biological development. From birth until weaning, they are known as puppies, and this period is crucial for their growth and survival. Correct management during this time significantly affects their overall health and longevity.
1. Regulate Temperature: Newborn Tibetan Mastiffs have limited ability to regulate body temperature, making environmental conditions highly important. The kennel should maintain a stable and suitable temperature. In winter, plastic sheets are placed over iron mesh to block cold winds, while in summer, climbing plants like grapes or gourds can provide natural shade. The ideal temperatures for different age groups are: 28–32°C for the first 7 days, 27°C from day 8 to 21, and 23°C after 28 days. Keeping the area dry and clean is essential to prevent disease spread.
2. Promote Nursing: For the first 20 days, mother’s milk remains the primary source of nutrition. However, as the puppies grow, their nutritional needs increase. It's important to provide the mother with high-quality, easily digestible food to support milk production. Fresh animal and plant-based feeds should be given regularly to ensure sufficient milk supply.
3. Enhance Nutrition: After one month, puppies grow rapidly and require more nutrients than breast milk alone can provide. Introduce supplementary foods such as fresh milk, milk powder, broth, cooked egg yolk, porridge, and add cod liver oil, vitamins, and bone meal to improve their diet. This helps prevent malnutrition, weakness, and stunted growth.
4. Feed Appropriately: Tibetan Mastiff puppies have small stomachs, so it's best to feed them frequently—5–6 times a day. As they grow, the quantity and concentration of food should gradually increase to meet their growing energy needs.
5. Provide Clean Water: Fresh, clean water must always be available. Ensure that the water is free from contaminants and pathogens. The water bowl should be cleaned daily. In summer, water intake increases, so it must never be interrupted. Water temperature should be appropriate—cool in summer and warm in colder seasons. Always offer water after meals.
6. Disease Prevention: Before giving birth, the mother’s environment should be thoroughly disinfected using solutions like 2%–3% hot lye, 3% chlorhexidine, or 5% formalin. Regular cleaning of feeding tools with 2% potassium permanganate is also recommended. After birth, administer levamisole (1 tablet per 2.5 kg body weight) and deworming medication at 30 days old. Vaccinations should begin at two months of age to ensure long-term health.
Proper care and attention during these early stages lay the foundation for a strong, healthy Tibetan Mastiff. With consistent feeding, hygiene, and medical care, breeders can greatly improve the survival rate and overall well-being of their dogs.
