Chronicles of the Vineyard Through the Seasons

This past week marked the end of the 2024 harvest season at our vineyard, signaling the conclusion of another remarkable year. As winter approaches, our vines are now settling into their dormant phase, shedding their leaves in a blaze of autumnal colors. It's truly magical to witness the transformation of our vineyard through the changing seasons, and we couldn't resist sharing some photos from the past ten months. Scroll down to relive the journey with us!

The growing season began under clear skies and gentle rain, as our vines emerged from their winter slumber, pruned and ready for a fresh start.

By early spring, the first signs of life appeared—tiny buds breaking through the branches. This year's bud break occurred in late March and early April, setting the tone for an eventful season ahead.

As spring progressed, these buds unfurled into delicate leaves, giving the vines a lush, verdant appearance.

By late April, clusters of tiny buds began forming, hinting at the clusters that would soon develop into luscious grapes.

Over the next few weeks, the vines grew rapidly, their leaves spreading wide and the clusters maturing under the sun.

By June, the vines burst into bloom, signaling the transition from flower to fruit. This stage is crucial, as it gives us insight into potential yields come harvest time.

Following the bloom, we reached "fruit set," where flowers transform into berries. Each variety starts out green and opaque, developing its unique character over time.

As summer advanced, the berries swelled into vibrant clusters. Even though they were still green, there was already a sense of anticipation for what was to come.

When the sun had done its work, the grapes began to show hints of color—a process known as veraison. This marks the transition from growth to ripening, where the fruits take on their mature hues.

During veraison, the grapes deepen in color, becoming translucent and juicy, reflecting the warmth of the season. Our winemaker, Jesse, kept a vigilant eye on the progress, sampling and testing the fruit to determine the optimal harvest dates.

Harvest commenced with the whites, starting with our Sauvignon Blanc in early September. Meanwhile, the reds like Cabernet Sauvignon continued to ripen, basking in the summer sun.

Despite the intense heatwaves this season, our vines remained strong and healthy, although the accelerated ripening compressed the harvest timeline.

Picking the right time for each variety requires careful consideration, balancing flavor, acidity, and sugar levels. Jesse made strategic decisions every step of the way to ensure top-quality fruit.

Even before the last grape was picked, the vines began displaying their autumnal splendor. These bursts of color added an extra layer of charm to the end of the season.

As the fruit flowed into our winery, we focused on maintaining the highest standards, ensuring only the best grapes made it into our wines. It's a labor of passion and dedication!

This stunning image, taken just this week, captures the final press of the season. Our team worked tirelessly, and we're thrilled with the results!

Now, as the leaves fall and the vines settle into their winter rest, we invite you to visit us here at Rubino Estates. Experience the serene beauty of our vineyard and savor the fruits of the season. Until next year, stay warm and happy November!
