Nuclear magnetic resonance measurement of animal fat, moisture, lean meat, metabolism

Of NMR solid fat content can be determined, the oil and water content of various foods or feed, should be perfectly used in food quality testing and quality control.

There is a particularity in the analysis of the body composition of animals. Several methods for determining body composition of animals, such as dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), isotope dilution, and whole body conductivity (TOBEC).

DXA in vivo determination of fat is based on the measurement of bone density using a bone densitometer, expansion and extension for fat content and distribution. It has been widely used in the analysis of body composition of experimental small animals. However, the accuracy of this method of measurement will vary depending on the instrument and the software used.

CT and MRI can analyze body composition at the tissue and organ levels. Two measurements can be used to obtain images of specific fat pads or organs, allowing for further analysis of the amount of fat and the amount of tissue that makes up the muscle. However, the two instruments are expensive, cumbersome to operate, and the measurement time is too long.

TOBEC is also a fat content measured by an indirect method. The advantage is that it is cheap, the instrument is easy to carry, the accuracy is high, and the operation is simple. However, the value measured by this method is not accurate enough, and the extremely small error of the amount of muscles leads to a very high fat mass. Large errors and the inability to track changes in body composition.

DXA, CT, and MRI all require anesthesia for animals. TOBEC does not require anesthetized animals but the measurement is inaccurate. There are certain defects, and the fat, muscle, and moisture of the animals cannot be measured well.

The EchoMRI100 Body Composition Analyzer (animal fat/metabolism meter), based on the principle of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), provides a comparison between different soft tissues by the time required for hydrogen atoms to be in different tissues, self-rotation and recovery. Radio pulses allow the hydrogen atoms to spontaneously rotate and emit radio signals that the instrument receives and analyzes. The amplitude, duration and spatial distribution of the signal are related to the compositional properties of the scanned object. The use of specialized radio pulse sequences further enhances the height contrast between fat, muscle tissue and water.

The animal EchoMRITM Body Composition Analyzer measures total fat mass, muscle mass, free water and total body water content. This technology is faster and more accurate than other methods. Rapid measurements can be made without anesthesia, calming or limiting animal activity. Unlike DXA, this method has no radiation, does not require the subject to remain motionless, does not have any pressure on the animal body, and can quickly track small changes in body composition. In addition, the instrument can measure the content of fat and muscle tissue separately, while DXA can only get the ratio of fat to muscle content.

After comparison, the repeatability of the instrument measurement results is currently superior to any other measurement method.

Compared to traditional MRI, the system is inexpensive, noise-free, easy to operate and requires no special training.
