If there is sufficient water availability and forage is abundant in the area, goose farming can be successfully established. To begin with, it's important to select high-quality goslings that are fast-growing, hardy, and able to thrive on rough feed. Suitable breeds include white geese and gray geese. The goslings should be lively, strong, and show good yolk absorption. They should stand firmly after their feathers have emerged and respond quickly when their necks are gently lifted. Those with weak bodies, poor appetite, or weak voices should be culled early.
For the first few days after hatching, goslings should be given a 0.05% potassium permanganate solution mixed with 5 ml of vitamin C, 16 ml of vitamin B, 5 g of glucose, and 3 g of brown sugar per 100 liters of the solution. This should be offered three times over five days. Fresh lettuce leaves or other green vegetation should be placed in clean areas and fed every two hours. From day 2 to day 4, they can be fed soaked rice seeds, four to five times daily, including one feeding at night. Between days 5 to 10, feed them seven to eight times a day, with two nighttime feedings. During this period, the diet should consist of 20–30% grains and 70–80% green feed.
From day 11 to day 20, switch to a compound feed combined with grazing. Feed five to six times a day, with two evening meals. A typical feed formula (in %) includes: corn 50, fish meal 8, peanut bran 10, rice bran 20, fine lotus root 10, auxin 1, shell powder 0.5, bone meal 0.5, plus 0.5% antibiotics and multivitamins, and 0.3% table salt.
Once the geese reach 4 weeks of age and grow up to 10 weeks, they should be moved to a growing house. At 30 days old, they start eating green feed before their primary wing feathers develop. Provide concentrated feed to support their growth and encourage physical activity, which improves their survival rate. Feed them four to five times daily, including one night feeding. Chop pasture and mix it with concentrate feed in a trough, maintaining a ratio of 1:4 (concentrate to pasture). This semi-dry, semi-moist mixture helps digestion and nutrient absorption.
Concentrate formulas can be made at home. One option includes: corn flour 45%, rice bran 15%, bran 10%, soybean meal 22%, fish meal 4%, bone meal 1.5%, shell powder 1.6%, trace elements and vitamins 0.5%, and table salt 0.4%. Another option is: corn 20%, fishmeal 4%, peanut bran 4%, rice bran 10%, fine lotus root 60%, auxin and antibiotics 1%, shell powder 1%. Adjust the quantity as the geese grow.
Cut the forage into 1–2 cm pieces for easier consumption. If there’s no water area, provide clean water in a dispenser and change it twice daily. Clean the growing area once a day and replace the grass regularly. On sunny days, allow the geese to graze outdoors. After feeding, ensure the environment remains clean, hygienic, and safe to promote healthy growth.
After 40 to 50 days of rapid fattening, the geese will have developed their main feathers. When their weight reaches 1.5–2 kg, you can begin a "high-energy, low-protein" feeding regimen for 20–30 days to reach a final weight of up to 4 kg. (To be continued)
