Despite its high nutritional value, fresh silkworm frass is not easy to store for long periods due to its tendency to spoil and mold. To extend its shelf life, it should be dried thoroughly until the moisture content drops below 15%. Alternatively, it can be fermented using methods such as silage in large cylinders or cement pits, ensuring tight packing to promote lactic acid fermentation.
It’s also important to note that silkworm frass may contain disease-causing agents from the silkworms themselves. Therefore, it should be stored in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, especially in areas where silkworms are raised, to prevent contamination and ensure safe use as animal feed.
