To ensure a successful and sustainable soft-shelled turtle farming operation, several key steps must be followed. First, constructing the pond is crucial. Soft-shelled turtles are sensitive to noise, wind, and dirt, so it's important to choose a quiet, shaded area with good drainage and irrigation systems. For a self-sufficient farm, five types of ponds should be built: a breeding pond, a fry pond, a juvenile pond, a third-instar pond, and a grow-out pond. The bottom of the pond should not be sandy; if it is, it should be replaced or improved. Ponds should have feeding and drying areas on the sides, and a 1-meter-high fence made of bricks or asbestos boards should be installed around the perimeter to prevent escape.
When selecting seedlings, it’s essential to choose healthy turtles from reliable sources. These can either come from hatcheries or wild populations. Before introducing them into the pond, all turtles should be quarantined for at least 15 days. Injured or weak individuals should be treated separately until they recover. It’s recommended to stock about 100–150 kg of third-instar turtles per 667 square meters, with a maximum of 200 kg.
Feeding practices should be scientific and cost-effective. While commercial fishmeal is commonly used, it can be expensive and sometimes low quality. A better approach is to use natural feeds such as food scraps from nearby restaurants, snails, clams, small fish, and insects. You can also cultivate mud loaches and snails in the pond. Adding plant-based supplements like bran, corn flour, and bean dregs along with small amounts of fruits and minerals can improve nutrition.
Maintaining good water quality is vital for turtle health. The water depth should be kept between 30–40 cm, and water should be changed every three days, replacing one-third each time. Green plants like water lilies or water hyacinths can help maintain water clarity and reduce stress. Water should be refreshed every four days, with a quarter of the volume replaced each time to keep the environment clean and oxygen-rich.
Disease prevention is another critical aspect. Common diseases include fungal infections (water mold), neck disease, red neck disease, intestinal inflammation, hemorrhagic disease, white spot disease, turnip disease, and cold disease. Each has specific treatments, such as using malachite green solutions, antibiotics, or disinfectants. Regular cleaning, proper feeding, and maintaining stable water temperature are essential to prevent outbreaks.
By following these guidelines, farmers can create a healthy and productive environment for raising soft-shelled turtles while ensuring long-term sustainability and profitability.
