In recent years, coriander has become a popular crop due to its high economic returns, especially during the hot summer season. However, growing coriander in such conditions can be challenging. To ensure successful cultivation, the following techniques are recommended:
First, it's essential to choose heat-resistant and high-quality varieties suitable for summer planting. Varieties like "Four Seasons Incense Parsley" are ideal as they can withstand higher temperatures while maintaining good flavor and yield.
To manage the intense summer heat, farmers can implement cooling measures. This includes using rainproof sheds or shade nets to reduce direct sunlight exposure. Another effective method is intercropping, such as growing coriander under the shade of loofah vines, which naturally provides a cooling environment.
Before planting, prepare the soil thoroughly by applying sufficient basal fertilizer. Ploughing the land deeply ensures proper root development. For each 667 square meters, apply approximately 2000 kg of organic manure along with 20–30 kg of compound fertilizer to enrich the soil with necessary nutrients.
Seed treatment is another important step. Soak the seeds in cold water for 12 to 15 hours, then drain and place them in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Cover them with wet sacks to maintain moisture. After 2–3 days, when the sprouts begin to appear, the seeds are ready to be sown. The recommended seeding rate is 1.5 to 2 kg per 667 square meters.
After sowing, proper field management is crucial. Keep the soil surface moist by covering it with wet grass or mulch to retain moisture and protect the young plants from extreme heat. Once the seedlings emerge, remove the cover promptly and perform light hoeing between rows, keeping a spacing of 4–5 cm between rows and 2 cm between plants.
At around 2 cm in height, apply a diluted solution of urea at a concentration of 0.03% to 0.05% to promote healthy growth. Regular watering and careful monitoring will help ensure strong and vigorous plants.
Harvesting should be done based on temperature and plant size. Typically, coriander is ready for market 20 to 30 days after sowing, when the plants reach a height of 6 to 10 cm. Timely harvesting not only ensures better quality but also maximizes yield and profitability.
