Summer cilantro tips

In recent years, coriander has become a popular crop in summer due to its high economic returns. However, growing it during the hot season can be challenging. To ensure successful cultivation, the following techniques are recommended: Choosing heat-resistant varieties is crucial for summer planting. Varieties such as "Four Seasons Incense Parsley" are well-suited for high temperatures and maintain good quality. This selection helps improve yield and marketability. To combat the intense summer heat, farmers can use cooling methods like rainproof sheds or shade nets. Another effective strategy is intercropping, such as growing coriander under loofah trellises. This not only provides natural shade but also optimizes land use. Before planting, prepare the soil thoroughly by applying sufficient basal fertilizer. For every 667 square meters of land, mix 2000 kg of organic manure with 20-30 kg of compound fertilizer. Deep plowing ensures better root development and nutrient absorption. Seed treatment is an important step. Soak the seeds in cold water for 12 to 15 hours, then drain and place them in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Cover them with damp cloth to keep them moist. After 2 to 3 days, when the sprouts appear, they are ready for sowing. The recommended seed rate is 1.5 to 2 kg per 667 square meters. After sowing, proper field management is essential. Cover the soil surface with wet grass to retain moisture and protect the young plants from direct sunlight. Once the seedlings emerge, remove the covering promptly. Thin the plants to maintain a row spacing of 4-5 cm and plant spacing of about 2 cm. When the seedlings reach a height of around 2 cm, apply a light fertilizer solution, such as 0.03% to 0.05% urea, to promote healthy growth. Harvesting should be done at the right time, depending on temperature and plant size. Typically, coriander is ready for harvest 20 to 30 days after sowing, when the plants are about 6 to 10 cm tall. Timely harvesting ensures better quality and higher market value. By following these steps, farmers can successfully grow coriander even in the summer heat, maximizing both yield and profitability.
