Second, careful management is crucial. From February to March of pregnancy, the placenta is still developing, making the cow more susceptible to miscarriage. Avoid sudden movements or overcrowding when grazing. From May to June, pregnant cows should avoid strenuous work, such as plowing fields, to prevent abdominal injury. In the last month of pregnancy, avoid steep hills or rough terrain when grazing, and watch for cold storms. Cows with premature conditions or udder issues can benefit from warm water (40°C–50°C) baths for 20 days before calving, which supports mammary gland development and eases calf care. Keep the cow’s environment clean, dry, and well-ventilated with adequate light. Avoid overcrowding in the barn. A week before delivery, thoroughly clean the barn, dig new soil, spray with 2–3% caustic soda, and treat walls with 20% lime milk. Provide a soft, short bed of grass for the cow to lie on.

If a cow shows signs of fetal distress—such as abdominal pain, restlessness, lying down, vomiting, frequent urination, or mucus-like discharge from the vagina—it may require immediate attention. Treatment options include: 1) giving 250–500 ml of shochu orally to induce mild sedation; 2) intramuscular injection of 10–15 ml of progesterone for mild fetal movement; 3) using herbal remedies like fresh ramie root, Agrimonia, and Jianshui for blood heat or vaginal bleeding; and 4) for habitual abortion, administering a traditional herbal formula starting at five months of pregnancy. This includes herbs like Angelica, Chuanxiong, Dodder, white peony, Fritillaria, Huangqi, Nepeta, Park, licorice, black eucommia, Dipsacus, and others, prepared as a fine powder and taken with ginger.
