It has strong resistance to pests and a dry onion rate of 63%–65%. (2) During the seedling stage, drumstick onions are vulnerable to beet armyworms, which can burrow into the leaf sheaths and feed on the inner tissues. To prevent this, farmers can use insecticides such as Onion Bacteria, King Onion, or Kung Fu, applied according to instructions. (3) Welsh onions are typically planted between mid-June and early July. Seedlings should be 30–40 cm tall with a diameter of 1–1.5 cm. Choose land that hasn’t been used for onions or garlic in the past three years, and apply sufficient farmyard manure along with balanced chemical fertilizers. When planting, ensure seedlings are spaced properly to avoid competition. After planting, water thoroughly, especially during hot and rainy seasons. If temperatures exceed 25°C, growth slows, so soil aeration should be maintained. Drainage is crucial to prevent rot and plant death. (4) The best growing season for green onions is around the time of the White Dew festival. During this period, the bulbs grow rapidly, requiring increased water and nutrients. The pseudo-stems develop under a dark environment, so regular soil cultivation (at least 3–4 times) is essential. Each time, cultivate the soil below the leaf base, and loosen the soil between rows to promote healthy growth. Soil protection from leaf damage is also important. For intercropping wheat, sow seeds after soil preparation, increasing the seeding rate on ridges to ensure a good wheat harvest the following year. (5) After frost, Welsh onions stop growing, and nutrients move from the outer to the inner leaf sheaths. This process enhances bulb quality. When the outer leaves turn yellow-green, it’s time to prepare for harvesting, ideally 15–20 days before the soil freezes. (6) Common diseases affecting Welsh onions include downy mildew, gray mold, purple spot, yellow dwarf, and rust. To control these, practice crop rotation and clean the farmland regularly. Fungicides like 75% Yincheng, 50% Onion Bacteria Net, and 50% Onion Cloven King can be alternated for effective management. (7) Pests such as onion leaf miners, thrips, and beet armyworms often attack Welsh onions. Control methods include removing weeds and debris to eliminate pest habitats. For chemical control, use insecticides like 75% omethoate, 50% phoxim, or 1.8% avermectin for leaf miners and thrips. For beet armyworms, options include 5% wormworm, 1.8% avermectin, and 50% phoxim. Always choose products from reputable manufacturers and follow label instructions. (8) In the late harvest phase, using artificial shoots instead of chemicals helps avoid residue issues and ensures a safer, higher-quality product. This method has proven to be very effective.
