Fertilizers, pesticides, and plant hormones are essential inputs in horticultural production, playing a vital role in ensuring high yields and improving the quality of agricultural products. However, in practice, farmers often mix two or three of these substances together. When done correctly and scientifically, such combinations can enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and overall performance. On the other hand, improper mixing may lead to reduced efficacy, crop damage, or even toxic effects.
To ensure safe and effective mixing, certain principles must be followed. First, the mixture should maintain its original physical and chemical properties, allowing both fertilizer and pesticide functions to work as intended. Second, no harmful chemical reactions—such as neutralization, precipitation, hydrolysis, or salting out—should occur. Third, the mixture should not cause any toxicity to the plants. Fourth, the components should have similar application timing, target areas, and usage objects to maximize their combined effect. Lastly, when in doubt, it’s crucial to conduct small-scale tests before applying the mixture on a larger area.
When mixing fertilizers and pesticides, special attention is needed. Solid fertilizers and solid pesticides can usually be mixed directly, but when dealing with solid-liquid or liquid-liquid combinations, caution is required. For instance, alkaline pesticides like Bordeaux mixture or lime sulfur should not be mixed with ammonium-based fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate or ammonium chloride, as this may cause ammonia volatilization or precipitation, reducing the effectiveness of both. Similarly, alkaline fertilizers like ammonia or lime should not be combined with organophosphorus insecticides, as they tend to break down under alkaline conditions.
Chemical fertilizers should also not be mixed with microbial pesticides, as they can kill beneficial microorganisms. Additionally, arsenic-containing pesticides should not be mixed with potassium or sodium salts, as this could produce soluble arsenic, leading to phytotoxicity. Among all combinations, fertilizer and herbicide mixes are the most common, followed by pesticide and fungicide combinations.
In terms of fertilizer mixing, insoluble phosphate fertilizers like superphosphate or bone meal should not be mixed with alkaline fertilizers such as wood ash or lime, as this reduces phosphorus availability. Alkaline fertilizers like calcium magnesium phosphate should also avoid being mixed with ammonium nitrogen fertilizers due to increased ammonia loss. Moreover, chemical fertilizers should not be combined with bacterial fertilizers, as their corrosive nature can harm beneficial microbes.
When mixing pesticides, certain precautions apply. Carbamates, pyrethroids, and dithiocarbamate fungicides may degrade under alkaline conditions. Acidic environments can also affect the stability of compounds like 2,4-D sodium salt or amitraz. Organic sulfur-based pesticides shouldn’t be mixed with copper-containing preparations, as they can form complexes and lose activity. Microbial insecticides and systemic organophosphorus insecticides should not be combined with fungicides. Also, emulsifiable concentrates or wettable powders must remain stable without separation or precipitation.
Finally, when mixing plant hormones with pesticides or fertilizers, it’s important to check for signs of incompatibility, such as oil slicks, flocculation, sedimentation, discoloration, heat, or gas formation. If none of these occur, the mixture is likely safe for use. Always prioritize safety and test small areas before large-scale application.
