Cucumber Ethylene Drug Recovery

The application of ethephon to induce female flower differentiation in cucumber seedlings within greenhouses has become a well-established technique in modern farming. However, many vegetable growers still struggle with accurately determining the right concentration of the chemical. This often leads to overuse, which can cause severe issues such as stunted growth, excessive flowering at the top, and the development of stiff, unproductive seedlings. In some cases, the growing tip may even die off completely. To address these problems, the following corrective measures are recommended: 1. Improve fertilizer and irrigation management by increasing the use of available nitrogen-based fertilizers and ensuring frequent watering. This helps maintain sufficient nutrient and moisture levels, supporting healthy plant recovery. 2. After raising the temperature inside the greenhouse, keep it around 30°C during the day to stimulate seedling growth, while maintaining lower nighttime temperatures to continue the process of female flower differentiation. 3. If phytotoxicity occurs due to ethephon concentrations above 200ppm, apply gibberellin at a concentration of 20–50ppm to mitigate the damage. The following precautions should be followed: (1) Dissolve the gibberellin in alcohol or liquor before preparing the solution to ensure proper mixing. (2) Apply the treatment as soon as symptoms appear, as delayed application reduces effectiveness. (3) A second spray should be done one week after the first, and most plants typically return to normal within 15 days. By implementing these steps, farmers can better manage the effects of ethephon and improve the overall health and productivity of their cucumber crops. It's essential for growers to monitor their plants closely and adjust treatments based on real-time observations. With careful attention and proper techniques, the negative impacts of improper chemical use can be minimized, leading to more successful harvests.
