MIT Technology Review Releases Ten Breakthrough Technologies: Precise Editing

Since 2001, the MIT Science and Technology Review has published “Top Ten Breakthrough Technologies” every year and is expected to have a major impact on human life and society. Immune engineering

Breakthrough technology: Killer T cells can be used to destroy cancer.

Important: Cancer, multiple sclerosis and HIV can be treated through immune system engineering.

Genetically engineered immune cells are saving the lives of cancer patients. T cells in the human body (the so-called killer cells in the immune system) can recognize and kill invaders, while engineered T cells made by genetic technology can recognize and attack specific virus cells, and have a memory function. 2. Accurate editing of plant genes

The gene editing technology CRISPR (one of the top 10 breakthrough technologies in 2014) provides an accurate method for transforming crops that can increase yields and fight drought and disease more effectively. Studies over the past year have shown that such edited plants do not have traces of foreign DNA. China has used it to create antifungal wheat and increase rice yield. It is not clear whether the CRISPR crop will be subject to the same regulations as GM crops.
