First, focus on summer pruning. When removing the plastic film, it's important to retract the tree crown promptly for heavy trimming. This helps maintain a balanced and manageable canopy.
1. Reduce the central leadership. This technique can lower the overall height of each cherry tree by 50-80 cm, preventing excessive vertical growth that could hinder air circulation and light penetration inside the greenhouse.
2. Cut back and remove the main branches. Strong and middle-sized main branches should be pruned back to the middle or rear part of their origin, encouraging new growth and better development of the main branches.
3. Carefully trim every branch. It's essential to meticulously prune the branches and twigs of the main branches and trunk. Remove dense "chicken leg" branches, upright shoots, overlapping branches, and competitive branches at the edges. Shorten medium-length branches while preserving the winding ones that contribute to fruit production.
4. Train new fruiting branches. After the tree is pruned, many new shoots will emerge. If they are in suitable positions, they should be trained into new main branches or fruiting groups. If not, they must be removed immediately to prevent unnecessary competition.
Second, manage fertilization and irrigation.
1. Apply top-dressing with watering. After removing the plastic film, apply fertilizer promptly. Dig trenches between each pair of plants, 30 cm deep and 30 cm wide from north to south, and 100 cm long from east to west. Fill each trench with 250-300 grams of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer. After covering the soil, restore the raised bed and re-cover with plastic film, then drip water and seal the area. During this process, cut any roots found during excavation to renew and shrink the root system, reducing its size and controlling tree growth. Be careful not to damage the plastic film while digging. Water and fertilize together. A second round of fertilization should take place in mid to late September, with trenches dug on the opposite side of the planting line. This rotation ensures even distribution of nutrients throughout the year.
2. Apply foliar fertilizer. After removing the film and pruning, combine this with disease prevention by spraying a solution of 1,000 times diluted "Tianda-2116" fruit tree special formula mixed with 0.7% brown sugar and 0.3% urea, 3-4 times every 7-15 days. After June ends, switch to a mixture of 0.4% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, 0.7% brown sugar, and 0.3% urea, alternating solutions and spraying once every 7-10 days for 3-4 applications in total.
Third, spray paclobutrazol. Starting in early July, spray a 15% paclobutrazol solution diluted 200-300 times every 10-15 days, applying it 1-3 times consecutively to suppress shoot growth and promote flower bud differentiation.
Fourth, ensure proper drainage. Cherry trees are highly sensitive to waterlogging, and if the field becomes flooded, the trees can die within 24 hours. After removing the film, continue to raise the ridges, cover with mulch, and use a waterproof rake. During rain, always monitor and drain water promptly—never allow standing water between the rows. This practice is crucial for maintaining tree health and longevity.
