Rice Resistance to Rice Blast

American scientists have found genes that help protect rice against rice blast, which is a disease that can reduce crop production by 30% in infected crops. Rice is one of the world's major food crops, and two-thirds of the world’s population depends on it to survive. Despite several years of hard work, farmers are still unable to withstand the damage caused by the rice blast fungus that causes rice blast. It is a very adaptable pathogen that can defeat the protective barrier of rice. The Maryland Agricultural Research Service Center has been focusing on the mapping of the germ genome in 2002 and comparing it with the disease-resistant genome of rice in an effort to find ways to eliminate disease. Rice carrying the new gene will respond to pathogens carrying the AVR1-CO39-a gene and limit possible damage.
