The Aesculus tree, commonly known as the horse chestnut, is a striking ornamental species admired for its beautiful foliage, showy flowers, and unique fruit. Aesculus chinensis, also known as the Chinese horse chestnut or sassafras tree, is a tall deciduous tree with a straight trunk and an open, spherical canopy. Its leaves are palmate, typically consisting of 5 to 7 leaflets that are oblong or obovate in shape, with pointed tips and conical bases. The white flowers appear in dense, upright clusters, often reaching up to 25 cm in length. The fruits are round, oval, or gourd-shaped, appearing from September to October. The bark is grayish-brown and exfoliates over time. This tree thrives in warm, partially shaded, and moist environments. It is resilient to drought and cold but prefers deep, fertile soil for optimal growth. While it can tolerate some sunlight, excessive exposure may hinder its development. Seedlings grow slowly during their first few years, but they tend to accelerate after three years. Due to its slow growth and low seed germination rate, propagation can be challenging. Propagation is mainly done through seeds, which should be sown immediately after collection in October, as dried seeds lose viability quickly. When planting, the seed must be placed with the pointed end down, and the depth should not be too deep. Germination usually occurs within 25 to 30 days. Seedlings require protection from cold and shade during their early stages. It takes about 5 to 6 years before they are ready for use in urban greening projects. The European variety has white flowers with red and yellow markings, while the Japanese type features white blooms with red centers and pear-shaped fruits. These species are also cultivated in cities like Shanghai and Qingdao. Beyond its ornamental value, Aesculus has various practical uses. Leaves and flowers can be used as natural dyes, while the bark and roots produce soap. Seeds can be processed into starch or oil, and when cooked, they resemble chestnuts in taste. They also have medicinal properties, such as calming nerves and acting as an insecticide. The lightweight wood is suitable for making paper, carvings, and furniture. Due to the limited number of Aesculus esculenta species and the scarcity of seedlings in China, there is a growing demand for these trees in the market.
