On December 19, in a study published in Nature Chemical Biology entitled "Inhibitors of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DosRST signaling and persistence," scientists at Michigan State University (MSU) found that they saved millions of lives. The antimalarial drug artemisinin may help treat tuberculosis and slow the development of drug resistance. The co-author of the study was MSU's microbiologist Robert Abramovitch.

Abramovitch said: "When M. tuberculosis is dormant, they become highly resistant to antibiotics. Blocking dormancy can make tuberculosis bacteria more sensitive to drugs, which is expected to shorten treatment time."
