Release date: 2017-11-28

Peking Union Medical College Hospital announced on November 27, 2017 that the hospital's Department of Respiratory Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Pathology jointly reported the world's first adult HIV antibody-negative AIDS with pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma. Related papers are published in the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Respiratory.

The patient was a 46-year-old man who had been transferred to several hospitals in China. Although the HIV antibody screening test was suspected to be positive, the Western blot test used to confirm HIV infection was negative. After antibiotic treatment and anti-tuberculosis treatment were ineffective, the patient came to Peking Union Medical College Hospital. After lung biopsy, pathologists under the microscope found that the lung lesion is Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), and the disease occurs in people with low immune function and AIDS. According to experts, KS is a common opportunistic tumor in HIV/AIDS patients and a manifestation of HIV/AIDS progression to the end stage. The literature was searched for the patient's first HIV antibody-negative HIV-infected lung KS found in adults. The first author of the paper, Associate Professor Zhang Hong, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, said that the imaging and pathological features of AIDS lung KS are typical. The hospital is the first to diagnose pulmonary KS by pathology in China, which is groundbreaking and helpful. Improve the awareness of doctors in the country.
