Atmel Announces Cortex-M4 Flash Microcontroller

Atmel has released a sample of the SAM4S16 based on the Cortex-M4 processor and released the fifth-generation Cortex-M4 flash microcontroller.

In 2012, the SAM3 and SAM4 series will enable Atmel's Cortex-M product portfolio to quadruple to 200 ARM microcontrollers, including on-chip storage devices with up to 2MB of flash memory and 192KB of static random access and peripherals such as high-speed USB.

Some of Atmel's ARM Cortex-M4 flash family also includes a floating point unit (FPU) that extends Atmel's product portfolio to the digital signal controller market.

The SAM4S16 has a maximum frequency of 120MHz, a storage capacity of 1024KB of flash memory and 128KB of static random access. Its peripherals include full-speed USB, high-speed SDIO/SD/MMC, UART, TWI, SPI, I2S, 12-bit ADC and DAC, and support for PSRAM. External bus interface for LCD modules, NOR flash and NAND flash.

The SAM4S16 features hardware code protection and supports Atmel QTouch technology developed for touch button, slider and wheel applications.

Compared to the Cortex-M3 SAM3 series, the Cortex-M4 SAM4 series offers up to 2x faster fixed-point execution and 10x faster floating-point DSP.

Atmel's ARM Cortex-M4 processor-based flash microcontrollers are scheduled to be available in 2012 and will offer up to 2MB of flash memory and 192KB of static random access. Its peripherals include high-speed USB OTG, Ethernet and CAN, and support for PSRAM. External bus interface for LCD modules, NOR flash and NAND flash.

The SAM4 Series is designed for applications in the medical , power management, motor control, smart metering, industrial automation, and embedded audio industries.

Since 1998, Atmel has introduced four generations of ARM processor-based flash microcontrollers, including the SAM3, SAM9XE, SAM7 and FR40162 series.

Atmel is sending samples of SAM4S16 to early customers. Other products in the SAM4 series will be available in 2012. The SAM4S series will be in volume production in the second quarter of 2012.
