The Ministry of Science and Technology of South Africa has identified biotechnology research as a key research area focusing on medicine, agriculture and industrialization. In the field of plant and agricultural biotechnology, research on drought-resistant and disease-resistant maize will be the top research project. South Africa has also expanded the scale of genetically modified potato cultivation trials and hopes that the genetically modified potato can be listed in China in 2007. In 2004, the company invested and planted the first batch of transgenic crops used to produce HIV/Aids vaccines, focusing on the relationship between genetically modified corn, tobacco and experimental vaccines. The first five-year National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan was formulated. This is the first time that South African scientists have been engaged in this work. It will provide detailed guidelines for the conservation of South African biodiversity and the sustainable use of various resources.
